A car exploded near the historic Red Fort in New Delhi on Monday, killing at least eight people and injuring several others, according to city police. The blast also sparked a fire that damaged multiple vehicles parked nearby.

Authorities said several fire engines were dispatched to the area after the explosion occurred close to one of the gates of the Red Fort metro station. The exact cause of the blast is still under investigation.

Police spokesperson Sanjay Tyagi confirmed to The Associated Press that eight people had died and several more sustained injuries. “We are investigating the cause of the explosion,” he stated.

Once an imperial palace, the Red Fort remains one of the capital’s most visited landmarks. Local media footage showed burned vehicles and police securing the area.

A nearby resident told News TV Channel that he heard a “window-shattering sound” followed by flames engulfing multiple cars.
